Auschwitz was originally a detention center that later expanded into not only a prison but also a site for barbaric and macabre medical experimentation on the prisoners.

Another Holocaust commemoration within the Jewish community is Yom HaShoah (shoah refers to a wind). Observed annually on the Hebrew date of 27 Nisan, roughly a week after Passover, and coinciding with the date of the Warsaw Uprising, Yom HaShoah this year runs from sundown on April 23 to nightfall on April 24.

Just over two years after the end of World War II, the Auschwitz camp was re-opened as a museum on June 14, 1947. The museum preserves and displays on exhibit tens of thousands of artifacts, many with very personal qualities. They range from suitcases, garments, jewelry (such as signet rings) and even kitchen utensils.
Some of the artifacts belonged to the SS Garrison and the guards responsible for undertaking the mass extermination.
