EAST NEW YORK – A FIVE-DAY STREAK without shootings last week marked the city’s longest period of no gun violence in 30 years, according to the NYPD – but four minutes after police noted the milestone on social media Thursday night, the peace was broken, when an East New York man, age 34, was shot in the leg and taken to Brookdale hospital, according to the New York Post.

Gun violence is slightly down this year compared to last year, possibly due in part to the record-breaking cold temperatures that have gripped the city recently: police said there have been 29 shootings so far this year, compared to 39 in the same period last year, although the number of victims affected is still the same. Last year, Brooklyn saw record lows of shootings and victims, according to police.

One of these shootings occurred in family-favorite Carroll Park on Jan. 11, when victim Jordan Dillard, age 23, was shot and killed in a hail of gunfire in the early hours of the morning. Additionally, on Jan. 2, a teenager was shot and injured while walking to school in Fort Greene, managing to flee into another school for help; on Jan. 4, three people were injured at a Cypress Hills restaurant; on Jan. 5, Shamael Miller, 41, of Queens, was shot and killed in Coney Island; and on Jan. 10, police shot and injured a robbery suspect.
