DYKER HEIGHTS — ST. EPHREM ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH on  Bay Ridge Parkway will host a special Mass at 11 a.m. this Sunday, Jan. 26 to launch this year’s Catholic Schools Week, with the Most Rev. Robert Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, as celebrant. The students from St. Ephrem Catholic Academy will participate in the Mass, with the academy’s student choir singing. Immediately following the Mass, the school will host a “Winter Wonderland” themed open house displaying student artwork, essays and more.

Catholic Schools Week, which the National Catholic Educational Association sponsors annually, starts on Sunday, Jan. 26, and continues through Saturday, Feb. 1. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.” Each day of the week will focus on different aspects of Catholic education, including celebrations of the faith, students and their families, vocations, teachers and staff.

National Catholic Schools Week, which was established in 1974 and begins on the last Sunday in January, is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Two years ago, then-Senator Marco Rubio (now Secretary of State) introduced a resolution in Congress to recognize the contribution of Catholic education in the U.S.
