Pungent flower blooms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — A RARE ODIOUS PLANT is blooming in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) for once in its 10 to 20 year flowering season. The Amorphophallus Gigas, a relative of the infamous Amorphophallus Titanum, is more commonly known as the corpse flower. Just like its smelly relative, the Gigas releases a strong foul odor during its bloom, which lasts only a few days.

The BBG announced the plant’s opening on Friday, Jan. 24, after a week of keeping tabs on the Gigas’ slowly unfurling leaves. Tons of visitors waited for their turn to take a whiff.
Kenny Dere, a visitor of the garden, shared that the stench reminded him of stinky cheese. Other visitors lingered in BBG’s Aquatic House where the Gigas is located, some even coming back for a second sniff. Maybe the odor just isn’t that impressive for New Yorkers and their already bombarded senses.
