
Bay Ridge Scandinavian group continues popular Fastelavn tradition

BAY RIDGE — SKIP NEW ORLEANS AND CELEBRATE MARDI GRAS right here in Brooklyn — Scandinavian style , on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Scandinavian East Coast Museum will hold its annual Fastelavn, the Danish Mardi Gras celebration, that precedes the beginning of the penitential Lenten season, which this year begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5. The holiday is a popular tradition in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, traditionally Lutheran countries.


Bay Ridge’s Fastelavn on Feb. 22 takes place at Vesuvio’s Restaurant and will include traditional games and foods, most notably the Fastelavnsboller, a sweet cream bun. The Brooklyn Eagle has covered past years’ Fastelavn festivities.
