CAPITOL HILL — THE SHORTAGE OF AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE in some areas of New York and nationwide will be the focus of a virtual press conference that U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is holding on Thursday morning, Jan. 23. Sen. Gillibrand will discuss her bipartisan legislation to address the nationwide shortage. She points out in particular that nearly two-thirds of New Yorkers live in communities lacking adequate access to child care; this represents a share higher than in all but four states.

Gillibrand is a co-sponsor of a bill that Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota introduced in the 119th Congress (2025-2026) on Tuesday, Jan 21. This bill, S.169, would assist states in carrying out projects to expand the child care workforce and child care facilities. Specifically, it would provide federal funding to help establish child care centers and to train workers to meet local needs for child care services, especially in rural communities.

In addition to Klobuchar and Gillibrand, the other Senate co-sponsors are Democrat senators Angus King of Maine, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Jeff Merkley of Oregon, as well as Republican Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska.
