BANGKOK — Thailand finally loosens the knot for those who want to tie it: A just-married couple from the LGBTQ+ community walks a rainbow carpet in Thailand, Jan. 23, 2025, on the first day a law took effect granting them the same rights as heterosexual couples. The bill officially signed into law last September after gliding through both houses of the Thai legislature, grants full legal, financial and medical rights to marriage partners of any gender.

The new law makes Thailand the third Asian nation, after Taiwan and Nepal, to allow same-sex marriage.

UKRAINE — Grim human reminder that war still rages: A dead body of a resident is seen in a destroyed apartment hit by a Russian nocturnal missile attack in Zaporizhzhia, Jan. 23, 2025. Russia launched a drone and missile strike on Zaporizhzhia overnight that killed one, wounded 31 others and plunged tens of thousands into darkness. Governor Ivan Fedorov said the attack destroyed an energy facility, with over 20,000 losing power and 17,000 left without heat.

Russian forces have been waging frequent attacks on Zaporizhzhia, a strategic industrial city near front-line fighting.

ISRAEL — Historic, iconic freshwater lake fed by the Jordan River: Migrating cranes flock at sunrise in Hula Lake conservation area, north of the Sea of Galilee, Jan. 23, 2025. Lake Hula, which sits about 41 kilometers north of the Biblical city of Capernaum, is home to the Hula Nature Reserve, a key worldwide refuge for water birds and a wet habitat in the Middle East.

The Hula Nature Preserve may be one of the few places in Israel untouched by military conflicts.

CALIFORNIA — Nature’s revenge — hard to imagine when this disaster will end: A firefighter sprays water as he monitors flames caused by the Hughes Fire along a roadside in Castaic, Jan. 22, 2025. Evacuations were ordered for communities near a new wind-driven wildfire that erupted north of Los Angeles. The fast-burning Hughes Fire broke out late Wednesday morning, destroying hundreds of acres of trees.

Castaic is about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

The same day, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) revived a special committee to investigate the riot, but this time with the goal of defending Trump’s actions and disputing the work of the bipartisan committee that investigated the siege two years ago.

MEXICO — Finally, Mexico really does have to build something: Workers begin the installation of a temporary shelter for possible deportees from the United States in Ciudad Juarez, on Jan. 22, 2025. Expecting the number of migrants to increase, a Mexican official, Enrique Serrano, said the tents being set up for the deportees comprised just the first stage of what they expect to be a larger operation.

Ciudad Juarez, in Mexico’s Chihuahua state, sits right on the border from El Paso, Texas.
