
George Washington is returning to Bensonhurst

BENSONHURST — GEORGE WASHINGTON IS coming back to Bensonhurst on his 293rd birthday, with a free show by experienced Washington portrayer Michael Grillo at the New Utrecht Reformed Church Parish House on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2:00 p.m.
In-character discussion topics will include Washington taking command of the Continental Army in 1775, the battle for New York and the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776, his victorious return to New York in 1783 and his inauguration there as the nation’s first president in 1790. A question and answer period and audience meet-and-greet will follow.
Grillo has been appearing as Washington for over 25 years. He was previously the education director at the Van Cortlandt House Museum for 20 years, and is presently a site interpreter at Washington’s historic estate, Mount Vernon.
The event is hosted by Friends of Historic New Utrecht. The Parish House is part of the landmarked campus of the New Utrecht Reformed Church, established by Dutch settlers in 1677 and located at 18th Avenue and 84th Street. No onsite parking is available.
