NATIONWIDE – THE JAMES BEARD Awards on Wednesday announced this year’s nominees for the prestigious restaurant industry honors, and while Manhattan eateries stole the spotlight, several Brooklyn restaurants scored places on the list for the New York region. According to Gothamist, Williamsburg’s Four Horsemen wine bar is up for the Outstanding Restaurant award, while Clinton Hill’s Fan Fan Doughnuts and Boerum Hill’s Leyenda were nominated in the Outstanding Bakery and Outstanding Bar categories, respectively.

Several top Brooklyn chefs also received nods in the Best Chef: New York State category: Nasim Alikhani of Prospect Heights’ Persian Sofreh (a returning nominee), Ayo Balogun of Bed-Stuy’s Nigerian Dept. of Culture (a finalist for Best New Restaurant in last year’s awards), Chris Cipollone of Williamsburg’s Francie brasserie, and Emily Yuen of Greenpoint’s Japanese Lingo.

Finalists will be announced in the spring, while winners will be awarded at the James Beard Foundation gala on June 16.

Nasim Alikhani is the owner of Sofreh, a Persian restaurant on St. Marks Avenue in Prospect Heights. She emigrated from Iran in the 1980s after results of the revolution suppressed her freedoms.
