Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani garners support through social media

CITYWIDE — ZOHRAN MAMDANI, A 33-YEAR-OLD DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST, is the youngest of nine candidates in the 2025 mayoral race. While his competitors rely on conventional means to garner support, he takes a different route: social media presence.
By combining humor and policy on TikTok, X, Instagram and other platforms, Mamdani received contributions from more New Yorkers than any other candidate in the last fundraising cycle.
Though Mamdani poses serious policy proposals, much of his campaign relies on not taking himself too seriously. On New Year’s Day, Mamdani plunged into 40 degree water at Coney Island all to make a point to voters: “I’m freezing … your rent,” the caption read. The video received more than 800,000 views on social media, according to The City.
“I think humor often is far more effective at having someone open up to even consider you,” Mamdani told The City. “I think so much of politics has become so dark and so cruel that it’s thought of as that is the language of politics when that doesn’t have to be.”
Mamdani joined four other Democratic mayoral candidates at Brooklyn Law School for a panel on Thursday, Jan. 16, where the candidates discussed topics such as affordable housing, the Rikers Island closure and the city’s sanctuary status.
