WILLIAMSBURG — NUESTROS NIÑOS, A 50-YEAR-OLD DAYCARE, is at risk of closing after the Department of Education announced it will not renew the lease for its Williamsburg location, citing under-enrollment.

Parents and staff at the Latino-run daycare dispute this claim, emphasizing that programs for two- and three-year-olds are fully enrolled. Mayor Eric Adams has promised to reassess the decision, but without intervention, the daycare will close on June 30.

Estephanie Garcia, whose son is the third generation in her family to attend, praised the home-cooked meals and bilingual instruction and worried about affordable childcare options.

“We are suffering,” Garcia told ABC News. “It’s already really expensive to live in New York, it’s hard to pay a $4,000 rent and pay upwards of two to three or $4,000 for child care and go to Whole Foods to buy food.”

The DOE stated it would assist families with transitioning to other programs, stressing the importance of sustainable community services. Other groups with leases canceled by the DOE include the Friends of Crown Heights childcare center and the Fort Greene Council senior center.
