NYCHA residents report loss of heat and hot water amid freezing temperatures
Mayoral candidate State Sen. Zellnor Myrie responds

NEW YORK CITY — DURING A WEEK OF THE COLDEST WEATHER NYC has seen in nearly two years, over 3,000 residents of New York City Housing Authority complexes have reported that they are without heat or hot water, according to Gothamist.
Landlords are required to maintain a minimum temperature of 62 degrees according to city law, but some NYCHA apartments are dipping below 50 degrees. The FDNY warns against heating homes with kitchen ovens at the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or fire, but residents of Polo Grounds Towers told FOX 5 NY that they had resorted to using their stoves for heating in the extreme conditions.
NYCHA responded to the crisis saying that heat staffing has been increased and that heat and hot water has been restored in thousands of apartments within the past 24 hours, but some residents are still without warmth.
Mayoral candidate and State Sen. Zellnor Y. Myrie blamed slow gas repairs for the heat-less conditions in a post on X: “This is unconscionable. NYCHA’s capital backlog has quintupled in a decade. That’s why I passed a bill to fast-track NYCHA gas repairs and why I’m the only candidate for mayor with a plan to revitalize and expand this crucial source of affordable housing.”
NYC Housing recommends contacting your landlord or super if you are without heat and hot water, for the fastest results. If still in need of assistance call 311 or use its website.
