Hon. Turquoise Haskin inducted as NY Civil Court judge
‘It’s an honor of a lifetime’

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT— Brooklyn native Hon. Turquoise Haskin, whose name recalls the ancient gem stone that was worn by pharaohs and Aztec kings, was formally inducted as a judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 12 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, located at 574 Madison Street, before a crowd of approximately 200 spectators.

Haskin has been a court attorney for more than 17 years and worked on the resolution and disposition of thousands of cases affecting every day New Yorkers. Notably, she has worked directly with her judge in dispensing justice on nearly 400 jury and bench trials in Kings County Civil and Supreme Courts.

Haskin’s work as a past member of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association Board of Directors and editor-in-chief of its news publication represent some of her most esteemed accomplishments. The judge’s work in all of these areas for nearly two decades has endeared her to a broad and dedicated constituency of friends and fans.

Haskin said her new role is “an honor of a lifetime,” and she told the Brooklyn Eagle, “I can’t wait to serve the people of Brooklyn in this capacity.”

Guest speakers included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who called Haskin, “a proud child of Brooklyn, who has spent her professional life protecting the people of the community she loves so much.”

“This is an incredible milestone for an already incredible legal career,” Schumer added.
Assemblymember and Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, also in attendance, referred to Haskin as a champion for justice. “It is truly an honor to see [you] elevate,” she said.

Frank Seddio, retired Surrogate’s Court judge, former Brooklyn Bar Association president and past chair of the Kings County Democratic Party, addressed Haskin directly, telling her that she will be “one of the most spectacular judges we have on the bench.”

“You are a credit to the courts, a credit to the system we have, and you’ll be one of its brightest stars,” Seddio said.

Haskin earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Marketing from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a Juris Doctor degree from the Emory University School of Law. Her passion for the community is best illustrated through her mentorship of more than 40 students and volunteer work as a Small Claims Arbitrator and a Canarsie Lions member.

Haskin has also spearheaded several virtual legal clinics and presided as a Moot Court Judge for NYU law student oral arguments.

Haskin has earned a reputation for her integrity, patience, temperament and effectiveness in identifying issues and resolving disputes between diverse parties. In 2024, she was the recipient of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her service.
