BROOKLYN — THE NATIONAL WEATHER Service and the city Department of Emergency Management have issued a Cold Weather Alert across the five boroughs while freezing temperatures grip the area as part of a polar vortex. Residents are urged to bundle up with hats, gloves, scarves and jackets if heading outdoors, as hypothermia and frostbite remain significant risks during the current cold snap.

The city Department of Homeless Services declared a “Code Blue” emergency and has dispatched outreach teams to assist the homeless population. The DHS is asking the public to call 311 if they notice someone who appears to be without shelter or in distress. Resources are available to help those exposed to the extreme weather find shelter and warmth. Signs of hypothermia, such as slurred speech, confusion, or memory loss, require immediate medical attention.

The dangerously low temperatures are expected to persist throughout the week.
