EAST FLATBUSH — THE FDNY PUT out two fires in Flatbush this week, working outside despite the freezing temperatures to contain the flames, the Brooklyn Paper reports. Over 100 firefighters on Monday morning responded to a two-alarm fire at 102 East 46th St. in East Flatbush, where at 11:15 a.m. they found flames spreading through a hidden “cockloft” space between the second floor and the roof. The fire was extinguished in under an hour, without injuries.

And in the early hours of Wednesday, an elderly man was rescued from a three-alarm house fire at 1005 East 38th St. in Flatbush, with first responders carrying the victim from the building before he was taken to a hospital with burn injuries. The blaze took 130 personnel three hours to extinguish in 8-degree weather, with frozen-over fire hydrants reportedly hindering the effort and firefighters becoming coated in ice. Crews attempted to fight the fire within the building before being forced to evacuate ahead of a partial roof collapse.

Both fires are under investigation by the FDNY Fire Marshal’s Office.
