Brooklyn DA’s office to host Lunar New Year Celebration

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — THE LUNAR NEW YEAR FALLS less than a month after the celebration of New Year’s Day on Jan. 1, and District Attorney Eric Gonzales will host an inaugural Lunar New Year Celebration Wednesday night on behalf of the DA’s office to commemorate the year of the snake.
The Lunar New Year will be Wednesday, Jan. 29 this year, but celebrations usually begin a couple of days prior and last several days after. The day marks the beginning of springtime on the lunisolar calendar. This year transitions from the year of the dragon to the year of the snake, which represents wisdom and transformation.
The holiday celebrates the coming of spring with fireworks, confetti, poppers and many red decorations, which are believed to bring good luck in the new year.
Brooklynites are invited to celebrate the year of the snake downtown with the DA’s office from 6p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the City College of Technology at 300 Jay St. Tickets are free, but advance registration is required.
