INDIA — They call it a festival, but it’s really a knife fight: Roosters attack each other during a cockfight as part of Jonbeel festival near Jagiroad, in Morigaon district, Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. The full and preferred, polite form of the word is cockerel.
However, people from other cultures consider the staged fights to be a form of animal cruelty. One Louisiana state senator, Art Lentini, fought to ban the practice during his time in the legislature. However, lawmakers in other states, such as Oklahoma, have fought to decriminalize the popular sport.

GUATEMALA — Religious fervor in colorful costumes and dramatic performance: Freddy De Leon poses for a portrait in his Prince Tecun Uman costume before performing the Dance of the Conquest of Guatemala on the feast day of the Black Christ of Esquipulas in Tejutla, in Guatemala’s San Marcos department, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025. The Conquest of Guatemala was a 16th-century conflict that lasted in intensity from 1527-29, although many historians claim it continued through the end of the 17th century. Because Guatemala was poor in natural resources, the victorious Spaniards not only enslaved the indigenous people but also taxed them on their own goods.
One of Latin America’s most famous Black Christological images, the Black Christ of Esquipulas represents the conversion of the indigenous folk, who worshipped a pagan nebular deity “Ek-Kampulá.” The patronal feast day for the Black Christ of Esquipulas is Jan. 15 each year.
