CONEY ISLAND — THE LAND USE COMMITTEE of Community Board 13 at a Wednesday night meeting rejected a casino project called The Coney, a proposed “Las Vegas-like” entertainment complex that would also include a hotel, convention center and music venue. Land Use Committees make recommendations to public officials regarding land-use and zoning matters. The vote was seven-to-two, with one abstention. A vote by the full community board is set for Jan. 22.

The Coney is backed by a powerhouse team that includes the Chickasaw Nation’s Global Gaming Solutions, Saratoga Casino Holdings from upstate New York, Legends Hospitality Group – a partnership between the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys – and Thor Equities.

The companies and supporters behind The Coney promise a $200 million trust for the Coney Island community if the $3 billion project goes through, along with thousands of full-time unionized jobs. Opponents of the project say it will worsen traffic, hurt local businesses, increase crime and demolish 90% of Luna Park rides.
