BROOKLYN COLLEGE — THROUGH A GIFT FROM a former student, Chafen Lu, Brooklyn College was able to create the Peter and Anne Lipke Professorship in Biology, the school announced on Wednesday. Lu was a former student of Professor  Peter Lipke, whose tenure at the college began in 2006 and who retired in 2024, according to Brooklyn College. His wife, Ann Lipke, served as lab manager and co-taught at Brooklyn College.

“Through the generosity of Chafen Lu, the Peter and Anne Lipke Professorship in Biology will celebrate the legacy of one of Brooklyn College’s most distinguished and accomplished science faculty members while continuing to offer our diverse students a strong foundation in biological sciences,” said Brooklyn College President Michelle J. Anderson.

Chafen Lu was previously an assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She has a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology from CUNY Graduate School, where Peter Lipke was her advisor. Lu, who is from China, was encouraged by Lipke to move to New York, and was introduced by him to molecular biology, in turn igniting her distinguished career at Millennium Pharmaceuticals and the Marine Biological Laboratory Council.
