Bed-Stuy bakery offers bread with no price minimum

BED-STUY — BAKERY BY TEXTBOOK at 874 Hancock Street is offering bread at prices set by the customer, says The Times of London. The focaccia bread is priced normally at $6.50, but employees at the counter ask customers what they want to pay, calling the transaction “name your price bread.”
Tony Yarema and his team have been labeled as “commies” on social media for their act of charity. “We want people to feel comfortable coming in and paying what they can,” said Yarema, 29, to The Times. “In America, especially in a place like New York, which is such a Mecca of money, people feel like they’re doing something wrong.”
Yarema cites the area’s rapid economic development – and in turn higher cost of living – as his reason for offering bread at low prices, saying that his ultra-discounts are part of a pay-it-forward model, in which some customers can pay more for other menu items, such as pastries or coffees, so the business can continue to give back to the community.
