WILLIAMSBURG — Book Thug Nation, a secondhand independent bookstore on North Third Street in prime Williamsburg, announced that it will be closing after 16 years of business. Sunday, March 16 will be the bookstore’s last day, although its sister bookstores — Codex in SoHo, Troubled Sleep in Park Slope and Human Relations in Bushwick — will remain open.

“It’s not because independent bookstores are an endangered species (they are thriving, with more opening every year). It’s not because the neighborhood has changed (although it has). It’s not because of rising rents or greedy landlords (our landlord is the greatest and barely raised the rent all these years), but she has decided to sell the space, and we’ve decided not to buy it,” the shop announced on a sign in its window and a post on Instagram. “After 16 years here, we are ready to move on.”

Book Thug Nation hosted community events and was named one of the best bookstores in the city by CBS, Brooklyn Reader, Dazed and The Eye of Photography.
