SUNY Downstate chair to lead area American College of Physicians

CITYWIDE – SUNY DOWNSTATE HEALTH Sciences University is hailing the election of Chair of the Department of Medicine Dr. Moro O. Salifu as the Governor-elect for the New York Brooklyn/Queens/Staten Island Region of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Salifu will begin his term as governor-elect on April 5, 2025, and assume a four-year term as governor on April 18, 2026. He will oversee local ACP activities, including scientific meetings, programs for medical students and residents, and public representation, and as a board member will contribute to shaping national policies on internal medicine.

“This appointment reflects Dr. Salifu’s longstanding commitment to advancing internal medicine, fostering professional development, and improving healthcare outcomes […] He is widely recognized for his expertise in nephrology and health disparities research,” the university wrote in a press statement.

Born in Ghana, Dr. Salifu, M.D., MPH, MBA, was named Master of the American College of Physicians in 2018 and received the NY American College of Physicians Laureate Award in 2022.  He serves as chair of the chapter’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force. Dr. Salifu is also the Edwin C. and Anne K. Weiskopf Endowed Chair in Nephrology and Transplantation at Downstate.
