NATIONWIDE – STARBUCKS COFFEE ON Monday announced new rules that will require patrons to make a purchase in order to use its facilities at all stores nationwide, reports Fox Business. This is a reversal of its “open-door” policy instituted in 2018, following a widely publicized incident in which two Black customers were arrested while waiting for a friend at a Philadelphia Starbucks. The chain said that the change was necessary in order to “prioritize [its] paying customers,” citing unruly behavior and a desire to keep stores welcoming. Under its new CEO, Brian Niccol, Starbucks is attempting to reestablish itself as a “third place,” and will also launch other new policies, like free refills for customers who stay in-store and bring reusable cups.

Starbucks told CBS that it accepts that customers may need to use the restroom or the wi-fi prior to buying.
