Myrie raises $3 mil, qualifies for matching funds

CITYWIDE – STATE SEN. Zellnor Myrie, who represents areas of central Brooklyn including Crown Heights and Prospect Lefferts Gardens, has raised more than $3 million from donors and has officially qualified for matching funds for the mayoral election, the Zellnor for NYC campaign announced on Tuesday. According to a press statement, more than 3,300 donors contributed an average of $127 each, from all 51 City Council districts.
Myrie launched his campaign in December, and is running on a platform centered around housing affordability, highlighting a detailed plan to build and preserve one million homes for all income levels across the city. He is a graduate of Columbia Law School and was first elected to the state Senate in 2018. Despite his fundraising success, however, the candidate faces an uphill battle in the crowded Democratic field that has emerged following Mayor Adams’ legal struggles, with a recent poll of Democrat voters having former governor Andrew Cuomo in first place by a wide margin.
“New Yorkers from across all five boroughs are coming together to support Zellnor because they are ready for fresh, new leadership in City Hall. Zellnor is serious about making our city livable and affordable – which is why he’s the only candidate who has released a plan to tackle the housing shortage head on,” said spokesperson Monica Klein.
