Governor Hochul announces ‘Unplug and Play’ kids’ wellness campaign

ALBANY & BROOKLYN — GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL on Tuesday unveiled ‘Unplug and Play,’ a comprehensive initiative to promote youth wellness, as part of her 2025 ‘State of the State’ address. The program aims to reduce screen time and enhance access to recreational opportunities by investing in community programs.
Key initiatives include:
- NY BRICKS: Grants for building or renovating community centers, especially those offering childcare, eldercare and mental health services.
- NY PLAYS: Expanded funding for new and renovated playgrounds, especially in underserved areas.
- NY SWIMS: $50 million for swimming pools and infrastructure, as well as free lessons for young children.
- Get Offline, Get Outside 2.0: Expanded funding and support for youth programming, sports and activities, like theater, music lessons, community gardens, debate clubs and more.
The plan also tackles online dangers by enhancing media literacy, placing guiderails on AI companionship apps, and criminalizing AI-generated child abuse materials. Hochul emphasized the importance of structured activities in fostering creativity, confidence and community for children.
State officials and health experts lauded the initiative as a significant step toward healthier, happier futures for New York’s youth. An estimated 26.9% of Brooklyn’s population is under the age of 18.
