BROOKLYN — WHAT’S MORE NEW YORK THAN A CHOPPED CHEESE? The Prospect Park Deli at 155 Prospect Park Southwest has gained notoriety on TikTok and other social media platforms for its inventive twists on the classic sandwich, with various iterations including wagyu chopped cheese ramen, hot dogs and taco salad. The deli’s presence on social media has exploded from 9,000 views on the first TikTok featuring its wagyu chopped cheese, to 278,000.

The chopped cheese is thought to have originated at Blue Sky (formerly Hajji’s) Deli in Harlem, with many theories behind its inspiration: some believe Dominican-American grillmaster Carlos Soto may have married adobo sauce with the Yemeni “dagha yamneeya” sandwich, which consists of chopped meat and vegetables served with bread. Many Yemenis own or operate delis in the five boroughs.

The quick grab-n-go food is not for the faint of heart, however. The dense sandwich can be served on a honeybun, a sweet bread.
