BROOKLYN — THE DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION is taking strict measures to ensure that people have properly stored trash inside their bins, fining nearly 500 people for leaving their trash bags on the curb since Jan. 2, reports News 12. A city mandate that began on Nov. 12 requires residents that live in homes of up to nine units to use securely fashioned trash cans, with sealed lids. The fine escalates from $50 on the first violation, to $100 on the second and $200 on the third. Official bins in two sizes can be purchased for discounted prices at www.bins.nyc.

“It’s really simple: You have trash, you have to have it in your bin on collection day,” said Javier Lojan, the acting commissioner of DSNY, to News 12 Brooklyn.
