HONOLULU — In Hawaii, the palm trees help out with the alphabet: Andrew Putnam hits on the 16th hole during the final round of the Sony Open golf event, Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. But there is suspense in golf, and pulling it off was 36-year-old Canadian player Nick Taylor, who won the Sony Open in a dramatic playoff. Taylor, who was behind by three players and not expected to win this tournament, performed “a stunning play on the 72nd hole that forced extra holes,” using a clutch shot.

Taylor, who has increased his consecutive PGA Tour wins (2025, 2024 and 2023), takes away the $1,566,000 prize.

NEW YORK — Clean hit, but watch out for the groin squeeze: Buffalo Bills wide receiver Mack Hollins (13) hits Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (19) on a kickoff during the second quarter of an NFL wild-card playoff football game on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, in Orchard Park, N.Y. The Bills won 31-7 in a Denver meltdown, enabling the Buffalo team to return to the AFC divisional round for a fifth straight season. The NY Times Athletic section’s Joe Buscaglia observes that this game proved the Buffalo Bills’ teamwork, but they will face even more formidable opposing teams than this year’s Denver Broncos, which have won three Super Bowl championships.

The Bills still aspire to win their first, although they have advanced to the Super Bowl four times without bringing home the trophy.

KATHMANDU — The universal river cleansing: Devotees take holy dips in the Sali river during the Madhav Narayan festival in Sankhu, northeast of Kathmandu, Nepal, Monday, Jan. 13, 2025. The Madhav Narayan observance is actually a strict fast, starting on the full moon of Poush and lasting a month. It includes disciplinary rites and a ritual holy bath, according to the Kathmandu Journal. The men and women engage in separate ritual baths.

This month, the tale of Goddess Swasthani and the festival’s namesake, Lord Madhav Narayan, is recited every evening. Adherents believe that the goddess fulfills the wishes of her devotees.

LONDON — It’s also ‘belly button day’: People on board a tube as they take part in the annual event “No Trousers Tube Ride” in London, Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025. The goal of this annual event is simply to be silly and to lighten up a midwinter’s weekend. Perhaps not surprisingly to those of us in the Big Apple, the first “No Trousers Tube Ride” originated in New York City’s subways in 2002.

Since then, several other cities around the world have joined the fun, including Jerusalem, Berlin, Prague, Warsaw, and, of course, Washington, D.C.
