BOROUGHWIDE — BROOKLYN RESIDENTS impassioned about having a say in their neighborhoods are invited to apply for membership on their local community board. January and early February of each year are the customary application seasons. Brooklynites who are at least 16 years old and live, work, attend school or have ties within one of the borough’s 18 Community Districts may apply to represent the district on a Community Board for a two-year term.

Community boards work with city agencies, elected officials and local leaders to ensure their neighborhoods’ perspectives and needs on area concerns – ranging from housing and land use to public transit and safety – are incorporated into the decisions that affect them. Each board member attends a monthly full board meeting, and is also assigned to committees that focus on municipal issues of interest; these groups also convene monthly. Expertise in a particular subject area is welcome but not required; local knowledge and love of one’s neighborhood is sufficient.

The application deadline is Friday, February 14 at 11 p.m. More information is available via www.brooklynbp.nyc.gov/community-boards. Brooklyn Borough Hall manages the applications and appointment of members for all the Community Boards.

A Community Board member makes an average time commitment of about six to eight hours per month. Approving liquor licenses for new food establishments, and approving zoning changes for new building development are among the  responsibilities of Community Boards.
