City shutters Floyd Bennett camp ahead of Trump admin

MARINE PARK – THE CITY ON Saturday at last began the process of closing down the controversial Floyd Bennett Field migrant camp shelter, reports the New York Post, with the final residents having departed for other shelters or elsewhere. Officials had worried that the incoming Trump administration, which has strongly opposed migration, could have canceled the camp’s temporary lease of the former airfield’s grounds, which are administered by the federal National Park Service; U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis had sought to introduce legislation to accomplish this, and praised the closure. Mayor Adams visited the site as workers dismantled tents, and stated he wished to see the area returned to parkland.
“I just want to personally say sorry . . . because this is something that none of us wanted. The federal government did not do its job, and New Yorkers had to do it for them,” Adams said.
