NATIONWIDE — Blue Ridge pet food for dogs and cats is contaminated with salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.  Last month, Blue Ridge Beef recalled 960 pounds of its two pound log Puppy Mix due to a contamination of salmonella. Last week, the company’s kitten food was added to the recall. Blue Ridge Beef is recalling 1,350 pounds of their two pound log Kitten Mix due to a contamination of salmonella, which can cause diarrhea, fever, lethargy, decreased appetite and other symptoms in pets. A customer complaint of pet illness prompted the recall. A product sample tested positive for salmonella at the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory, and on Jan. 3, the FDA notified Blue Ridge Beef that the product tested positive for salmonella. Affected products were distributed between July 18, 2024 to July 26, 2024, and may still be in consumers’ freezers. The product is packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in retail stores in New York, Connecticut and other locations along the East Coast and mid-Atlantic.

Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. Consumers are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pets exhibit the aforementioned symptoms.
