Williamsburg’s Metropolitan Rec Center suddenly closed, reopen time unknown
WILLIAMSBURG — A RECREATION CENTER run by the Parks Department at 261 Bedford Avenue closed down for repairs a few weeks ago, leaving users wondering when it will reopen, according to NBC New York. A mechanical issue affecting air circulation reportedly forced the closure. The Metropolitan Recreation Center was formerly a bathhouse, but was later converted into a gym and pool. Locals can access workout equipment and swimming lessons for $75 annually – a small fee compared to most gyms. The Parks Dept. emphasized its commitment to reopening the rec center as soon as possible.
“Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to safely reopening Metropolitan Rec Center to the community as quickly as possible,” said a NYC Parks Spokesperson to NBC4 New York. The center was constructed in 1922, when bathhouses were a popular way for the public to maintain hygiene.
