WASHINGTON, D.C. — ‘Why won’t Michelle return my phone calls …?’ Former President Barack Obama listens to President-elect Donald Trump as Melania Trump waits stoically before the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025. Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff arrived without time to chat or acknowledge those nearby. Reporters later asked Donald Trump about the conversation, to which the President-elect responded that he and former president Barack Obama “probably do” like each other, NBC News reported.

The two are political rivals who have frequently criticized each other’s policies. However, last August, Trump had kinder words for his Oval Office predecessor, telling CNN that “he likes Obama, calling him ‘a nice gentleman’ and saying he respects the Obamas,” NBC News reported.
