WASHINGTON, D.C. — A peek from the national day of mourning: The casket of former President Jimmy Carter arrives for a state funeral at the National Cathedral, Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, in Washington. Before the casket was escorted in, the funeral liturgy had begun with a series of preludes for carillon (church bells), organ, and orchestra, with music ranging from American composers Aaron Copland and Virgil Thomson to John Denver and Rodgers & Hammerstein. The service, formally titled “In Celebration of and in Thanksgiving for the Life of James Earl Carter,” followed the standard Episcopal liturgy for the Burial of the Dead.

President Joe Biden was the eulogist, and the Rev. Andrew Young, former ambassador to the United Nations, was the homilist. Several members of former President Carter’s family and staff were among those giving tributes.

CARACAS — Maduro Moto Rally: Motorcyclists participate in a rally in support of President Nicolas Maduro, days ahead of his presidential inauguration for a third term, in Caracas, Venezuela, Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025. However, according to an Associated Press analysis published on Wednesday, Maduro is facing more international rebuke than at any time in his 12 years in power. The United States and many others in the international community believe that Maduro lost the 2024 election by a landslide and that his allies helped steal the vote.

His opposition challenger, Edmundo González, still claims to have won that election and is vowing to return in time for Maduro’s inauguration.
