Brooklyn man sentenced for fatal shooting of teenager while firing into crowd
DOWNTOWN — ELIJAH HARRIS, 25, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2018 fatal shooting of 15-year-old Kyon Jackson near the Bushwick Houses, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced on Tuesday. Harris also wounded a 43-year-old man when he fired nine shots into a crowded playground and courtyard where 15 people were present, including children. The shooting occurred on July 17, 2018, as Harris opened fire while riding a bicycle near 370 and 390 Bushwick Avenue, striking Jackson in the chest. Jackson, a ninth grader at Lyons Community School, was rushed to Woodhull Hospital but did not survive.
Harris was convicted of second-degree murder, assault and weapons possession in October 2024. He was sentenced on Tuesday by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Donald Leo. “Senseless shootings like this tear at the fabric of our neighborhoods, leaving lasting pain and fear,” Gonzalez stated.
