NATIONWIDE — THE U.S. POSTAL OFFICE WILL SUSPEND operations on Thursday, Jan. 9 in commemoration of former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral that day. A spokesperson for the USPS confirmed to the Brooklyn Eagle that “there will be no residential or business delivery or retail services at Post Offices nationwide on Thursday, Jan. 9. We will resume normal operations on Friday, Jan. 10.”

A notice posted on the USPS.com website announced that “President Joseph R. Biden has declared Jan. 9, 2025 as a national day of mourning, calling on Americans to remember the vast contributions of former President Jimmy Carter. To honor the life and legacy of President Carter, the Postal Service will observe the national day of mourning.”

The website also noted that package delivery will be limited and could include packages that are outsourced from major independent carriers.

President Joe Biden, who will eulogize Carter at Thursday’s funeral, has signed a bill to name a U.S. Postal Service facility in Plains, Georgia after Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.
