NY Attorney General extends deadline for rideshare drivers to claim settlement funds
STATEWIDE — RIDESHARE DRIVERS WHO BELIEVE THAT UBER AND LYFT UNDERPAID THEM are urged to file claims before a Jan. 31 deadline to receive reimbursements from the settlements. State Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday urged the drivers to check their eligibility and file claims for the $328 million she secured in back payments as part of settlements her office reached in November 2023. The settlements were the result of the Office of the Attorney General’s investigation that found Uber and Lyft had withheld funds from drivers and failed to provide valuable benefits. James secured $290 million from Uber and $38 million from Lyft in the landmark settlement, which also instituted a minimum driver “earnings floor,” paid sick leave, proper hiring and earnings notices and other improvements in drivers’ working conditions. New Yorkers who drove for Uber between 2014 and 2017 or Lyft between 2015 and 2017 may be eligible to receive money from the settlement funds, which are being entirely distributed to current and former drivers. Although the claims page on her website shows an earlier cutoff, James has extended the claim filing deadline to Friday, Jan. 31 at 11:59 p.m.
In addition to paying a total of $328 million in back pay to former drivers, James required Uber and Lyft to institute an “earnings floor,” guaranteeing drivers across the state are paid a minimum rate from dispatch to completion of the ride.
