BAY RIDGE — THE VERRAZZANO NARROWS BRIDGE, which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island over New York Harbor (midway between the Upper Bay and Lower Bay) will get much-needed upgrades, including the reconstruction of ramps on its Brooklyn side. With critical funding unlocked, the MTA late last month issued Requests for Proposals on two Verrazzano Bridge projects: the ramp reconstruction and a dehumidification process to the main cables. The RFPs, sent specifically to shortlisted contracting firms, invited contractors to an informational meeting and site tour scheduled for early in the current week. The double-decked Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which opened in 1964 and recently celebrated its 60th birthday, was until 1981 the world’s longest suspension bridge (until the Humber Bridge in London surpassed it).

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is also in the district of Congressmember Nicole Malliotakis (R-11), who represents Brooklyn and Staten Island. She has been a vocal opponent of the congestion pricing plan; on the day the toll took effect, she vowed to continue fighting it according to a statement her office released on Jan. 5.
