MTA: Two subway lines serving Brooklyn set to get upgrades
BUSHWICK TO BAY RIDGE — BROOKLYN SUBWAY STATIONS ON the A/C and J/Z lines stand to get improvements from revenue generated from the newly-established congestion pricing plan, which took effect Sunday morning, Jan. 5 just after midnight, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on Monday. The MTA projects that, as part of the plan that will disburse 80% of the revenue to NYC Subways and Buses, 10% to the Metro North Railroad and 10% to the Long Island Railroad. After the pause on congestion pricing was lifted, the MTA exercised the option to purchase 265 zero-emission buses on Nov. 27. Since congestion pricing commenced, the MTA has already started to advance additional capital projects, moving ahead with five top priorities that include modernization of signals on the A/C lines in Brooklyn, for which the MTA issued a request for qualifications to the contracting community on Dec. 30; and to upgrade the Gates Avenue J/Z station and two others in Queens, for which the MTA issued a request for qualifications to the contracting community on Dec. 30.
The MTA projects the toll to lead to 80,000 fewer vehicles entering the Congestion Relief Zone every day, resulting in less traffic, cleaner air and safer streets, while providing $15 billion in funding for critical transit investments.
