GOWANUS — A MAN CUT A HOLE in the roof of a bodega at Smith and Ninth streets in Gowanus, then climbed inside and stuffed his bag with so much cash and merchandise he had trouble fitting through a subway turnstile as he made his escape. Police said the rooftop burglary took place at roughly 3:15 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. Once inside, the unidentified man removed approximately $900 from a cash register, an unknown amount of currency from an ATM machine, and store merchandise. He exited the store by climbing back out through the hole in the roof and fled on foot to the 9th Street / 4th Avenue subway station, where he became momentarily wedged in a turnstile before getting away on a Manhattan-bound D train.
