Drones still set to take to sky over Grand Army Plaza
PROSPECT PARK – THE NEW YEAR’S EVE drone show planned as a replacement for the usual Prospect Park fireworks is currently set to go forward starting at 10 p.m. on the 31st, reports Gothamist. New Year’s fireworks displays over Prospect Park and Central Park had been cancelled earlier this month due to drought conditions, with high-flying illuminated drones promised as a replacement. On Thursday, however, the New York Road Runners running club, the sponsor of the Central Park display, announced that following a Florida accident involving their drone vendor that severely injured a young boy, the group had decided to cut the annual show entirely over safety concerns. The Prospect Park show is being presented by a different vendor.
“Because of the timing, we were not able to either pivot back to fireworks or find another vendor,” the NYRR’s Crystal Howard told Gothamist.
