Latest graduating ‘probie’ class reflects FDNY’s growing diversity
QUEENS AND CITYWIDE — THE ALMOST 300 PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTERS who will graduate on Friday, Dec. 27 represent the New York City Fire Department’s increasing diversity, with people of color comprising 47% of the class. Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker presides over the graduation ceremony for 289 probationary firefighters at Queens College Colden Auditorium. Of this graduating class of probationary firefighters 23% identify as Hispanic, 21% as Black, 2% as Asian American and 1% as Native Americans. The class includes 28 veterans from the Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force. One Probationary Firefighter is a legacy, the child of an FDNY member who lost his life in the line of duty. During the past 18 weeks at the FDNY Training Academy, the probies, as they are called, trained in all aspects of firefighting: fire suppression and medical response, hazardous materials, collapse and confined space rescue training, auto extrication, building inspections and procedures for engine and ladder operations.
The probies will be assigned at firehouses throughout the city.
