FDA: Number of people sickened in cucumber Salmonella recall rises to at least 100
NATIONWIDE — AT LEAST 100 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SICKENED during an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium in loose slicer cucumbers distributed nationwide since Oct. 12, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 19, as part of an expanded recall. The FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and state partners continue to investigate a multistate outbreak of infections linked to these cucumbers, for which a November recall was reported in the Brooklyn Eagle.
As of December 17, a total of 100 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported in 23 states; of the 90 people for whom information is available, 25 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Of the 67 people interviewed, 54 (81%) reported eating or likely eating cucumbers.
The affected product was distributed to retailers and distributors nationwide, and several companies have issued recalls. FDA is working closely with impacted firms to determine whether additional recalls of American slicer cucumbers, processed recalled cucumbers, and products made with recalled cucumbers may be necessary. Producer and distributor label information is available via the FDA’s website.
