Apartments renting at new Gowanus development
GOWANUS — LEASING HAS BEGUN at the 13-story, mixed-use 655 Union complex in Gowanus, where an affordable housing lottery launched this October, reports NY YIMBY; the lottery closes on the 23rd, with move-ins expected to start soon. The units are spacious, with market prices in the $5,000s to $8,000s for one- and two-bedroom apartments. Fifty of the 193 apartments have been designated as affordable, with rents beginning at $888.
Renderings display luxurious, amenity-packed touches, with one-and two-bedroom units catering to the building’s target demographic, DINKS (Dual Income, No Kids), according to the New York Post. Spacious apartments built for couples will have a wood-and-matte white aesthetic, with plenty of space for hosting guests. The renderings also depict a rooftop pool with a skyline view, lounge areas, a gym and a pilates room.
The building’s site, also known as 204 4th Avenue, was formerly a Speedway gas station, and had to undergo heavy environmental remediation processes before residential development was allowed. Some restrictions remain in place: monitoring of groundwater and other possible contamination sources is required, and vegetable gardens in the ground are prohibited (and also impossible, as the building occupies the full lot.)
