CAPITOL HILL — AFTER CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS rejected a bipartisan plan to keep the U.S. government running – one which they had already helped craft – Brooklyn’s Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-09) on Thursday, Dec. 19 denounced the move.

President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk this week pressured Congress to abandon the plan and renegotiate it, in the same week of the federal funding deadline. The lawmakers now have until midnight on Friday, Dec. 20 to fund the government. The now-abandoned bill, titled “Further Continuing Appropriations and Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2025,” covered disaster relief, the environment (including water protection), foreign affairs, veterans, pandemics and more.

Congressmember Clarke stated, “It is clear, today, exactly who is pulling the strings of Donald Trump and his party. With the collapse of our bipartisan agreement to fund the government, my district and other New York communities stand to lose $4.2 billion in disaster relief funding programs that families depend on. The well-being of working people, veterans, seniors, and small business owners will be heavily impacted, as federal agencies won’t be able to provide the critical services my constituents rely on. They may lose the vital assistance they need to feed their families, or if they are essential workers like our TSA agents, they will be forced to work without pay during the holiday season.”

Clarke said, “Know that Democrats will remain united in our opposition to whatever chaos and division the GOP hopes to sow within the legislative branch in the days ahead.”
