More than two dozen chain stores closed across Brooklyn in 2024
BOROUGHWIDE — BROOKLYN LOST 27 chain stores over the past year, according to the 17th annual ‘State of the Chains’ report released Thursday by the Center for an Urban Future. The number of chain outlets declined in Brooklyn from 1785 stores in 2023 to 1758 in 2024 — a 1.5% decrease. The report shows the trend taking place across the entire city, with a 1.3% decline overall. Online competition has had a negative effect on merchandise retailers, especially those selling pharmaceuticals, cell phones, clothing and cosmetics, according to the report. Bucking the trend, however, the number of food chains — with some exceptions — increased in Brooklyn. The full report is online at nycfuture.org.
Retailers with the largest declines in Brooklyn over the past year include: Metro by T-Mobile (-11); Rite Aid (-6); Nathan’s (-4); Subway (-3); Dunkin’ (-3); M.A.C. Cosmetics (-3); and Danice Stores (-3). Retailers with the biggest store increases in Brooklyn over the past year include: Starbucks (+5); Popeye’s (+4); Auntie Anne’s (+4); Foodtown (+4); Cinnabon (+3); and Carvel (+3).
