CENTRAL BROOKLYN — REP. YVETTE CLARKE this week raised the alarm with the U.S. Postal Service about what she described as a “disturbing increase” in mail-, check- and identity-theft cases, as well as the removal of drop boxes within New York’s Congressional 9th District, which encompasses most of Central Brooklyn. In November, Clarke sent a letter to the Brooklyn Postmaster General highlighting positive steps the USPS has planned, including electronic mailboxes in high-crime areas, but expressing her concern “about the lack of immediate security efforts within our community and the financial toll that these crimes are causing my constituents.”

Over the past three years, her office has recorded over 170 mail- and check-theft cases, Clarke said in the letter. “Identity theft and fraud have become major concerns, as stolen checks and personal information are exploited, complicating economic recovery and decreasing a sense of security for victims.”
