CEO murder suspect Mangione being extradited to NY
BLAIR COUNTY, PA — THE SUSPECT in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan earlier this month has agreed to be extradited to New York, the Associated Press reports. Luigi Mangione, who law enforcement officers tracked down in Altoona, Pennsylvania on Dec. 9 — five days after the fatal shooting — after an alert McDonald’s customer recognized him from “wanted” posters, will return to New York to face murder charges.
Mangione agreed during a court appearance in Pennsylvania to be extradited, waiving a preliminary hearing in exchange for the prosecutor giving him a 20-page investigative report from the Altoona Police Department. At least a dozen NYPD officers were in the courtroom during these proceedings. Mangione, who has been charged in New York with murder as an act of terrorism, could be arraigned as early as Thursday, Dec. 19 in State Supreme Court. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment without parole.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg called Thompson’s death on a Manhattan street, “a killing that was intended to evoke terror. And we’ve seen that reaction.” At the time of the shooting, he was on his way to a hotel to speak at an investors’ conference.
Update: NBC News reports that a police motorcade delivered Mangione to Altoona’s airport on Thursday at 10:30 a.m., with an NYPD plane bound to New York taking off ten minutes later.
