Off-duty cop arrested in Brooklyn, charged with obstructing breathing

GREENPOINT — AN OFF-DUTY NYPD POLICE OFFICER was arrested early Wednesday in Brooklyn and charged with criminal obstruction of breathing and harassment in the second degree, police said. Rasheed Jefferson (AKA Karanja R. Jefferson), 45, was taken into custody at 2:21 a.m. within the 94th Precinct, which covers most of Greenpoint. According to WeGov.NYC, Jefferson has been with the NYPD since 2007.

Criminal obstruction of breathing includes applying pressure to the neck or throat of another person or blocking their nose or mouth, with the intent to impede their normal breathing or blood circulation, according to the New York State Uniform Court System website.
