Lieber: MTA’s proposed budget will help replace ‘antiquated elements’
CITYWIDE — MTA CEO JANNO LIEBER said at the agency’s final board meeting of the year on Wednesday that congestion pricing, which goes into effect in January, will help fund accessibility projects and replace obsolete elements of the subway system. Lieber said he met with the FDNY commissioner after an electrical explosion stranded thousands of subway riders for hours in Brooklyn last week.
“The bottom line is, we have to find a way to speed [the response] up,” he said. “But the bigger issue is that we cannot put off investing in these antiquated elements of our system, like the substation that blew up … I am blue in the face talking about the importance of a state of good repair.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul has spoken in favor of the proposed MTA’s capital program and has committed to finding the funds, Lieber said. The video of the entire finance meeting can be seen on YouTube.
